Raku Kiln Building

I along with 15 other potters attended a 2 day workshop in Hamlin Bay ( south coast of Western Australia)with Stefan Jacob an expert in raku kiln building fashioned from an metal Ikea bin.
The preparation prior to the workshop was incredible. Stefan had cut and welded grates for each of the kilns along with welding lugs on the tongs to name just a couple.
We drilled, cut and and wired fibre and shelves, fashioned chimney bases for a day and a half, and when the kilns were completed it was time to strike the match light the fires and have fun.
What caught my eye with this kiln is that the fuel used is wood.
I was amazed at how quickly and efficiently the kiln reached temperature and fired the work.
Stefan toured Australia for several months conducting workshops throughout Australia.
He certainly left a mark judging by the amount of IKEA bin kilns in use.
Images of the workshop can be viewed in the Gallery section. Go to the top of the page and click on gallery.
